Arbusto: originario del Tibet, è deciduo, alto fra i 60 ed i 120 cm. Gli steli più giovani sono angolati e rossastri.
Foglie: sono alternate, lanceolate, senza gambo, ispide sia sopra che sotto.
Fiori: la corolla è sottile, un tubo blu pallido lungo circa 2 cm con 5 petali di colore blu brillante, bianchi alla base. Il calice è pentalobato e a forma di punteruolo.
Fioritura: in agosto e settembre, nei giardini. E’una pianta coltivata, non esistono varietà selvatiche.
